Sufficient staffing is one of the most important indicators of a nursing home’s quality and safety. Due to questions about the accuracy of the self-reported staffing data published in facility listings on Nursing Home Compare, the 2010 Affordable Care Act requires facilities to electronically submit staffing information (including agency and contract staff) based on payroll and other auditable data. Since fall 2017, these data have been published on a quarterly basis on the federal database, data.cms.gov.

Below are links to individual files with information on direct care staffing for nursing homes in every state.   Each file can be quickly downloaded by clicking on the name of the state.

We have also compiled a single file with combined information for all states. It is available for download here:

US States SINGLE FILE SNF PBJ Direct Care Staff 2017Q3

To make this information as useful as possible, LTCCC has compiled the federal data into easy-to-use files for each state that are searchable and sortable. These files include the following information:

  1. Name of State
  2. Name of Nursing Home
  3. MDS Census (number of residents in the facility)
  4. RN Hours
  5. LPN Hours
  6. CNA Hours
  7. Total Direct Care Staff Time
  8. Average Staffing Hours Per Resident Per Day
  9. Average RN Hours Per Resident Per Day

Note: Resident census and staffing hours are the averages for the quarter (three month period).  See the Notes tab in each file for more information about the data.
