July 3, 2025—The Long Term Care Community Coalition is deeply disheartened by the passage of the so-called “Big Beautiful Bill” or H.R. 1, now approved by both the House and the Senate. This sweeping legislation will inflict profound and lasting harm on nursing home residents, individuals receiving home- and community-based services, and families who rely on Medicaid to access long-term care.

At a time when our aging population is growing rapidly and our long-term care system is already under intense strain, slashing Medicaid is reckless. Medicaid is the backbone of our nation’s long-term care system, covering over 60% of nursing home residents and millions more receiving care in the community. Cutting this critical safety net will not only jeopardize the health and safety of older Americans but also devastate families and caregivers who depend on these services.

Moreover, the bill delays implementation of modest nursing home staffing standards that are projected to save thousands of lives each year. Blocking these protections until 2035 sends a cruel message to residents and their families: your safety can wait.

This bill is not only a step backward, it ignores the realities of aging and caregiving in America and threatens to strip millions of the care they need to live with dignity. LTCCC remains firmly committed to our mission of advancing dignity, justice, and quality of care for all long-term care residents. We will continue fighting for the rights and protections that every person in long-term care deserves.

Call your lawmakers at 202-224-3121 or use LTCCC’s “Find Your Elected Officials” tool to tell them how these harmful Medicaid cuts will affect you, your loved ones, or your community.
