Patient and Caregiver Outcomes of Health System, Community-Based, and Usual Dementia CareA Prespecified Analysis of the Dementia Care Study (D-CARE) Randomized Clinical Trial. (2025). David B. Reuben, Alan B. Stevens, Thomas M. Gill, et al. JAMA Network. Available at https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamainternalmedicine/article-abstract/2838336.

  • This study tested two structured dementia care programs – one delivered through health systems and one through community providers – against usual care for people with dementia living at home and their caregivers. Neither program improved thinking skills, daily functioning, or caregiver stress compared with usual care, but caregivers in both programs reported feeling more satisfied and better supported. These findings suggest that while enhanced care models may not change clinical outcomes, they can improve families’ experience of dementia care.
