Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) training & certification requirements vary considerably across the U.S. In some states, the requirements go beyond the federal minimum while in other states requirements are nearly identical to the federal standards.

Maine CNA Requirements
- Eligibility/Screening Requirements
- Background check.
- Completion of the ninth grade of school (high school graduation or high school equivalency diploma preferred.
- Minimum age of 16 years.
- Nineth-grade English reading and writing competency level on the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE), Competency Adult Student Assessment System (CASAS), or other competency assessment mechanisms as approved by the Board.
- Education & Training Requirement
- Individuals must complete a state approved nurse aide training and competency evaluation program.
- Testing Requirement
- Individuals must pass both a written and skills test.
- Renewal & In-Service Requirements
- In-service requirements are the same as federal.
- Renewal requires 8 hours of nursing or nursing-related duties every 24 months.
- Hours
- 180 hours.
- Including at least 70 hours of classroom instruction, 20 hours of skills laboratory and 40 hours of correlated, supervised clinical practice.
